The Upstarts - The Know How 2007

Label:Subcontact

Never the ones that let current trends affect them
(music, social, fashion, etc.), "The Upstarts" seed
has grown out of a common respect for a certain
aesthetic value of all art forms which is audibly
reflected in their music. The larger Upstarts-Society
is a collaboration of artists and musicians centered
around a core trio simply know as The Upstarts.
Consisting of the former lead emcee "Profile" of the
now famous Sound Providers, "Price" (emcee) and "Iron
Mike" (DJ/Drummer).

The live band consists of veteran guitarist "ODZ",
seasoned keyboardist Dante Thomas, Ed Tagalog on Bass
and Iron Mike on Drums.

The Upstarts-Society collaboration for projects such
as the current "The Know How" 2007 album include:
Vocal tracks from industry renowned artists Grap Luva
and Kev Brown along with the highly recognized
regional artist Latanya Lockett and Blest. Producers
Kev Brown (Up Above Records/Low Budget Soul), and up
and coming producers Freddie Joachim (Organology),
Quaaludes (Blitzkrieg Militia) and W Steele (The
Upstarts) provide a sound that bridges the gap between
the golden era and today's new jacks The Upstarts
breath a refreshing sound back into the minds and
souls of everyone who loves "Classic Hip-Hop".

This album hasn't recieved much attention in The Essences, so I thought I'd put people onto some quality hip hop that went unappreciated this year. One of the underrated releases of 2007 in my opinion.

The Boston based group comprised of Nabo (Emcee) and Mista Jason (Producer) released two acclaimed independent albums: “Sloppy Seconds” was released in 1999 on Biscuit Head Records (same label to release Edan’s first recordings) featuring a rare guest appearance by Cage and later the sophomore effort “Taxachusetts” in 2004 on Detonator Records . The Porn Theatre Ushers have had a cult following since 1997 when they burst on the scene with 12” underground staples such as “Me and Him”, “Cat Nip”, “Wack Parties” and “Hellmouth” on college and commercial radio stations. Offwhyte - The Fifth Sun 2002

Label:Galapagos4

Offwhyte's new album The Fifth Sun is some serious hip hop. Backed by the momentum of Galapagos4's incredible stream of releases since the 2000 release of his debut CD Squints, Offwhyte returns with a fourteen track album that will break the necks of hip hop heads and challenge the feeble-minded. The album's first single, "High Fidelity" has gained airplay across the country and has been heralded by critics as showing a new, 'evolved' Offwhyte, and the rest of The Fifth Sun is sure to follow in that tradition. Delving deeper into his abilities as a songwriter, Offwhyte instantly shows his skills as a lyricist have gained a greater breadth on the intro track, a post-apocalyptic fable entitled 'the merchant'. The poetics get even deeper in the songs that follow, such as the brave new world-inspired "Beta Alpha" and the confessional "Complex Destiny". Other highlights include the uptempo crowd-pleaser "Ups" and Offwhyte's collaborations with Typical Cats emcees Qwel (on "Masonry") and Qwazaar (on "Get a Hold"). The Fifth Sun's production is top-notch, with beats handled by Meaty Ogre , Open i, Alias of Anticon, the late Chicago producer Metrognome, and Offwhyte himself. The album is sprinkled with minimal live instrumentation and scratching by Dallas Jackson and DJ Norman Rockwell of the Pacifics

Roundtable Mc's - Table Manners (Retail) 2001

Label:Neck Exercise

Hot underground Hip-Hop from San Diego mainstays, Roundtable MC's. Two MC's: Wick and Unite One, and DJ Mike Czech.
The Roundtable MCs: Mike Czech, Wick, and Unite One formed in 1996. The trio met in a music recording class at San Diego Mesa College. Realizing that they were on the same path both musicaly and philosophicaly, they soon began recording and relaxing with each other. In short time, the first Roundtable MCs project, Roundtable MCs (1997 cassette) was produced and distributed. Approximately 250 copies of this tape are in existance... 1998 marked the return of the Roundtable MCs with the release of Universal Discussion in November. Soon, the trio began to see the opportunity to perform, realizing the path that had been set years before. After a very successful CD release party, Roundtable MCs were soon a common sight at local and regional shows, performing with the likes of DEL, Souls of Mischief, Eek-A-Mouse, and many others. The 1999 12" vinyl release of the SD Chargers EP helped to solidify the crew's reputation for hard beats and conscious rhymes, and opened the way to national recognition. With distribution from TRC, Revolver and several internet based music shops, the word spread quickly.
After a solid year of recording, touring, and building, Roundtable MCs are set to hit the world once again. The Table Manners LP is set to hit the world in 2001, and a full year of touring is being solidified. Check the Roundtable MCs mp3.com page for the latest tracks, and feel free to explore the rest of this site to learn more about the history and the future of the Roundtable MCs.

Waajeed - The Patty Hearst Beat Tape CD-R (Bling47) promo only (2006)

Considering that Waajeed only began making music in 2000, he has already compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including production work for both multi-platinum and underground artists, djing at the most respected venues, and the founding of his own label, Bling47. In addition, he has received endorsements from such heavyweight producers as Jay Dee and Jazze Pha.

Waajeed’s first creative medium was the canvas. It was painting that landed him a full scholarship to the prestigious College for Creative Studies. Waajeed studied illustration for three years before deciding to leave the visual arts to explore music. A major impetus for Waajeed’s exploration of music was an offer to dj for his best friends, T3, Baatin, and Jay Dee - bka Slum Village - on their first European Tour. Waajeed jumped at the opportunity and returned from the tour with a desire to get behind the boards. By 2000 he had produced his first beat tape, which landed him 4 tracks on the Slum Village album, Trinity. Waajeed’s work on Trinity was met with much acclaim, including mention in The Source Magazine’s “Hot Tapes,” and led to his producing for multi-platinum German artists, Max Herre and ASD (Afrob and Samy Deluxe), as well as ghost producing for some of the industry’s most established names.

In 2002, Waajeed decided that he wanted to start his own record label. He had already acted as Executive Producer for Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 1 and Dwele’s Rize, which sparked international interest in both artists and led to their signing with major labels. To date, Waajeed’s label, Bling47, has released The Official Jay Dee Instrumental Series Vol. 1, The Official Jay Dee Instrumental Series Vol. 2: Vintage, and BPM, Waajeed’s instrumental album. All three albums have received much attention and are regarded as underground classics.

In 2003, Waajeed began working on a concept for an album on which he, as producer, could work with a rotating cast of musicians. PPP was born. Ubiquity Records took an interest in the project and Triple P was released in May of 2005 as one of the most successful indie albums of the year, receiving critical acclaim from nearly every major music publication in the market.

Most recently, Waajeed has completed remixes for Roy Ayers, Radiohead, Goapele, and The Herbaliser. As a DJ, he mixed and compiled The Universal Language Mix CD for Triple 5 Soul, which has been one of the most sought-after and heavily downloaded mixes of 2005. Waajeed’s main production projects at the moment are solo albums for Tiombe Lockhart and Invincible, both slated for release on Bling47 in the near future. He is also working on a project for his newly formed supergroup, The Jazz Katz. With this much already on his plate, Waajeed is clearly an artist you’ll be hearing much of in the coming years.

Waajeed & Bling 47 - BPM Instrumentals (2003)

Jay Dee's partner Waajeed also of Platimum Pied Piper fame (Ubiquity) delivers his own fourteen track instrumental album straight outta Detroit in a style similar to Andres's DJ Dez material for Hipnotech. Snappin', flowin', sample based downtempo hip hop with a subtle jazz/soul shuffle. Bonus CD is 'Best Kept Secret', Waajeed's thirty minute mix of some Bling47 gem's including tracks from Lacks, Platimum Pied Pipers, Marv One, Dilla plus some nice interludes and instrumental segments. A mighty nice offering.

Bukue One - Intromission - Advance (2007)

At the beginning of the disc, you're tossed into a Bukue One freestyle with all the crowd interaction trimmings. The vibe is accapella, and very much worth getting excited about the disc impending. The first studio track sounds out of the speaker are a light piano flake. Mostly percussion, and all of a sudden you're in the middle of a flowing hip hop song. Vocally, Bukue is neutral toned like Q-Tip, but with a bit more of controlled speed. Track six for instance, "Everyday" has an Eyedea like feel. Often times, an organ beat sound type vibe make for an appealing album as well. Track nine is the best upbeat mix with a bouncy clean type guitar stroke, and meaty breakbeat exemplify the soul of this release. Though not the hip hop setter for me this year, Intromission is certainly a solid top five pick, with lots of potential for a better future release. The quality is a bit shy, but the sweat you can imagine that went into this recording must have been as genuine as possible. Anyone that passionate, can feed me a CD to chance.
